Food truck POS: what you actually need

What a food truck POS really needs: one device, a reliable connection, card payments, order-ahead and QR at the window, and menus that change by event.

By the RestoGenius team

A food truck has no room for extra gear. Every device has to earn its place, and the setup has to work in a car park, at a market or in a festival crowd.

Here’s what a food truck POS actually needs, and what you can skip. You can also see how we built a food truck POS that runs on one iPad.

One device, if you can

Most trucks run happily from a single tablet or handheld. It takes the orders, shows what’s next and keeps track of the night’s sales.

If you print receipts or order tickets, a handheld with a built-in printer saves space. If you don’t, a tablet is often enough.

A reliable connection

A cloud POS runs over the internet, so your connection matters. Many trucks use a mobile hotspot or a 4G or 5G router.

Check the coverage at the sites you visit most. A market in a valley or a festival with thousands of phones can be patchy, so test before the first busy night.

Card payments that keep up

Most customers pay by card. A card terminal connected to your POS means the amount is ready when the customer taps, and the sale lands in your reports.

Ordering at the window

Queues are part of food truck life, but they don’t have to stop people ordering. A QR code on the window lets customers order while they wait, so the window keeps moving.

Online ordering helps too. Regulars can order ahead and pick up when it’s ready.

Your menu at a weekday car park won’t match your menu at a weekend festival. Look for a POS where changing the menu takes minutes, not a call to support.

Power for the whole night

Plan for a long service. Keep devices charged, carry a battery pack, and make sure your router and terminal can last until pack down.

Know which sites pay off

After a few weeks, compare your sales by night and by location. You’ll see which markets and events are worth the trip, and which items sell best where.

RestoGenius runs on the iPad you already have, or on a handheld we can supply. Customers can order online or by QR while they wait, and it’s all in one flat fee.
